Ensure Accuracy and Safety: Senior Engineer – Inspection Management

About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Senior Engineer – Inspection Management to lead the delivery of highway safety inspections and reactive maintenance across Derbyshire. This role is critical to ensuring the network remains safe, compliant, and supported by accurate, high-quality data.

You will manage a team of inspectors and delivery officers, oversee inspection regimes, and maintain robust quality assurance processes. Working closely with internal teams, contractors, and external partners, you’ll ensure inspections are completed on schedule, defects are addressed promptly, and inspection records meet legal standards.

This is a senior operational role requiring strong leadership, technical expertise, and a commitment to safety and continuous improvement.

Key Responsibilities
• Lead the delivery of highway safety inspections and reactive maintenance programmes.
• Ensure compliance with inspection policies, CDM regulations, and health and safety legislation.
• Manage inspection records and implement quality assurance frameworks.
• Oversee emergency response and coordinate urgent repairs.
• Supervise and develop a team of inspectors and delivery officers.
• Monitor budgets, track performance, and produce detailed reports for senior stakeholders.
• Liaise with commissioning teams, contractors, and external agencies.
• Champion innovation and continuous improvement in inspection and maintenance practices.
• Deputise for the Resilience Delivery Manager in strategic forums and public engagements.

About You
• Extensive experience in highways maintenance and inspection operations.
• Strong knowledge of inspection policies, health and safety legislation, and CDM regulations.
• Excellent leadership and team management skills.
• Proficiency in asset management systems and mobile data capture.
• Commitment to safety, resilience, and continuous improvement.

Essential Qualifications and Experience
• HNC/HND or equivalent in Civil Engineering or related discipline.
• Demonstrable experience managing inspection regimes and reactive maintenance workstreams.
• Strong understanding of legal processes related to public liability claims.

Desirable
• Membership of professional institutions (e.g., CIHT, ICE, IHE).
• Health and Safety qualifications (e.g., IOSH, NEBOSH).
• Experience in policy development and emergency response coordination.
• Familiarity with the Well-Managed Highway Infrastructure Code of Practice.
