Exciting things are happening within the Digital Services Team at Derbyshire County Council and we’re looking for an Infrastructure Engineer to join our team.

A major review of our organisation and strategies has been completed and we have invested in new tools to support a comprehensive and innovative Digital Services transformation programme, to support the delivery of key services to the citizens and communities of Derbyshire. 

This role will be pivotal in helping us deliver our transformation programme, as a key post within the Digital Services, Operations Services function, providing a technical lead across services. This includes supporting the Council’s New Ways of Working programme and ensuring that the Council’s services are fit for purpose. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who has significant experience of operating at a medium level in a large Digital Services environment, managing and delivering change and who really wants to make a difference.

Key Responsibilities of this role are:

Based within a dynamic and challenging environment, you will be working on several key systems including :

  • Microsoft SQL Server (2016, 2019 and 2022), SAP HANA, Sybase and MySQL databases delivering performant, secure and resilient database services.
  • Working with stakeholders to manage and maintain the Council’s Power BI and PowerApps platform.
  • Microsoft Azure cloud compute and networking.
  • On premise compute and virtual infrastructure.
  • Carry out 3rd line support and maintenance activities to ensure the Operations services deliver to agreed standards and levels.
    • Monitor database performance, identify and remediate database issues
  • Develop and maintain ETL processes using SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS)
  • Create and Manage High Availability (HA) options for SQL Server (Availability Groups and SQL Cluster)
  • Upgrade and Apply Security Updates to SQL servers 
  • Supporting the council’s database services on-premise and in its Microsoft Azure tenant
    • Migrate on-premise databases to Cloud Infrastructure
  • Acting as a technical specialist or lead expert in the Digital Services Operations function, providing professional expertise and knowledge to provide pro-active and agile database services
  • Working closely with service stakeholders to identify and develop solutions to meet business requirements
  • SQL backups and Recovery
  • Championing new ways of working, innovation and flexibility and forward planning

 What skills and experience do you need to have ?

  • Technical knowledge and administrative experience of either Microsoft SQL Server (2016, 2019 and 2022) or SAP HANA. Experience with other database technologies such as MySQL, Sybase, Influx, Graphite, Postgres and Azure Cosmos DB are advantageous but not essential.
  • System Administrator experience in at least one of the following Operating Systems:
    • Microsoft Windows Server 2012 / 2016 / 2019 / 2022
    • SUSE Linux Enterprise Server
    • Ubuntu Server
    • CentOS
    • Red Hat
  • Scripting experience in T-SQL and either PowerShell or Bash.
  • Technical knowledge and practical experience in backup, restore and disaster recovery using an enterprise backup solution such as CommVault or VeeamOne backup and recovery
  • Experience of using Power BI/Power Query/DAX Managing and managing On-premise Data Gateway and xperience with database and server monitoring tools such as Solarwinds, System Center Operations Manager and IDERA
  • Confident, and effective communicator
  • Proven experience of driving change and improving the delivery of services.
  • High level of communication and presentation skills both oral and written with the ability to advise on complex technical issues to non-technical audiences
