Derbyshire County Council manages almost 10,000 public rights of way, extending over 5,000 kilometres across the county. We are seeking an enthusiastic, customer-focused, and experienced individual to join our Public Rights of Way team and help us maintain and enhance this important network.

The Role

As a Public Rights of Way Assistant, you will play a key role in supporting the Council's responsibilities as Highway Authority, helping to ensure that Derbyshire's rights of way network remains safe, accessible, and enjoyable for all users.

Working alongside a committed team of technicians and engineers, you will contribute to the effective management, maintenance, and improvement of the county's public rights of way.

Key Responsibilities

  • Investigate and resolve reported issues affecting public rights of way.
  • Assist in the delivery of minor repair and maintenance works across the network.
  • Support the processing of Public Path Orders.
  • Help maintain and update the Definitive Map and Statement.
  • Respond to enquiries from members of the public, landowners, and other stakeholders.
  • Contribute to service improvements and achievement of team performance targets.
  • Promote excellent customer service and positive engagement with all network users.

About You

We are looking for someone who:

  • Has knowledge of highway and public rights of way legislation.
  • Possesses strong map-reading and navigation skills.
  • Can maintain accurate and detailed records.
  • Has excellent communication and customer service skills.
  • Holds a full UK driving licence.
  • Is able to work outdoors and walk long distances across rough and uneven terrain.
  • Works effectively both independently and as part of a team.

This Rights of Way Assistant role is contractually based in Darley Dale, Matlock, Derbyshire, but as part of our Modern Ways of Working programme we are currently working on a hybrid basis. There'll be an opportunity to discuss future working arrangements at interview.
