The Professional Services - Highway Design team at Derbyshire County Council is looking for an enthusiastic and experienced Senior Clerk of Works to lead and support a team in supervising Section 278 and Section 38 construction projects.

As a Senior Clerk of Works, you will play a crucial role in ensuring that highway development works comply with approved designs, regulations and quality standards.  You will lead a team of Clerks of Works, providing technical guidance, supervising works on site and liaising with developers, contractors and internal teams to maintain high construction standards across the county.

Key Responsibilities

  • Supervise and provide leadership to a team of Clerks of Works.
  • Ensure that highway development works meet technical approvals, safety regulations, and best practices.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed site records to manage disputes and variations effectively.
  • Work closely with Developers, Contractors, and internal teams to uphold quality standards in the adoption of new highways.
  • Assist in developing systems to ensure consistent and fair supervision of S278 & S38 agreements.
  • Contribute technical expertise to improve construction processes and materials used in highway schemes.
  • Support and mentor staff, promoting professional development.

We are looking for a highly skilled and motivated individual with:
Extensive experience in highway construction, particularly within Section 278 & Section 38 agreements.
Strong leadership skills with the ability to manage and develop a team.
A thorough understanding of construction methods, materials, and industry regulations.
Excellent communication and negotiation skills, with experience liaising with contractors, developers, and stakeholders.
Strong problem-solving abilities and the capability to make critical decisions on-site.
A commitment to upholding health & safety standards and ensuring best practices are followed.
A BTec HNC in Civil Engineering (or equivalent experience in highway construction supervision).
