The Landfill Aftercare Team is an established team within the Resources and Waste Service responsible for the effective delivery of environmental monitoring and management of the County Council’s portfolio of historic closed landfill sites. This position provides an exciting opportunity to be involved in continuing to ensure that the authority’s legacy sites do not have a harmful effect on the environment or adverse effect on people or their ability to enjoy the county’s countryside.
You will be primarily involved in working with the Assets & Infrastructure Officer and a small team of Aftercare Technicians in delivering environmental monitoring and proactive management of all aspects of historic closed landfill sites, such as environmental monitoring, mechanical gas extraction systems and landfill leachate management and disposal.
This is predominantly a field-based role in which most of our working time is spent attending sites across the county for routine environmental monitoring, as well as maintenance tasks to both physical systems and grounds maintenance activities such as grass cutting.
There is an element of desk-based work around data upload and interpretation, as well as administrative support across the various aspects required to fulfil the closed landfill aftercare team’s responsibilities.
If you are practically minded, love working outdoors and are a team player who doesn’t mind working alone, this could be the job for you! If you are interested but don’t have a history working with environmental management of closed landfill sites, but you think you meet most of the skills in the advert, we would encourage you to still apply as technical training will be provided.
N.B. This role requires a full driving licence and for applicants to have their own method of transport to be able to fulfil this role. This is a physically demanding role which includes a high proportion of lone working with work being carried out in all weathers to fulfil our team’s obligations.
What you will be doing:
- Responsible for the site-based assessment and monitoring of existing facilities in respect of landfill gas migration and leachate control, this includes regular routine site visits.
- Assist with the management of landfill gas control systems, including planned maintenance tasks, grounds maintenance, analysis of results and data as well as response to equipment failures. This may include liaising with contractors or supervision of small site works or similar where required.
- Assist with the management and interpretation of environmental data, preparation of reports and contract documents.
- Assist with administrative tasks as required in order to fulfil the obligations of the team in general.
What skills and experience do I need to have;
- BTEC Higher (Level 4) or equivalent qualification / experience in Environmental Science, Civil Engineering, Environmental Technology or similar. Relevant and appropriate post qualification experience will be accepted.
- Technical and practical problem solving skills are highly advantageous.
- An enjoyment of working regularly outdoors in all weathers and working with a variety of physical or maintenance tasks.
- Skills and experience in relation to closed landfill aftercare, environmental monitoring, or similar areas of work where these skills are transferable.
You will work closely with other Services within the Resources and Waste service to continually develop service improvement and efficiencies whilst embracing new technologies and best working practices.
We offer a friendly and supportive working environment, a variety of Derbyshire-based work, flexible working hours and the opportunity to develop yourself and your career.
Benefits of working for us include:
- Defined Benefit Local Government Pension Scheme
