As a Senior Solicitor/Legal Executive, you will play a key role in delivering high-quality legal services across the Council, helping to support the organisation's ambitious priorities and objectives while contributing to the continued development of the Legal Service.

Bolsover District Council is a dynamic and ambitious organisation that takes pride in delivering excellent services to our communities whilst driving economic growth and environmental sustainability across the district.

The Legal Team is a small but highly valued part of the authority, providing legal advice and representation across a wide range of service areas. As a senior member of the team, you will undertake complex and high-profile legal work, act as a trusted adviser to officers and elected members, and contribute to the strategic direction and continuous improvement of the service.

The team advises on a broad range of matters including commercial property, land disputes, contracts and procurement, planning, licensing and regulatory services, public sector housing, governance, and criminal and civil litigation. We are seeking applications from experienced Solicitors or Legal Executives with significant experience in commercial property, land transactions , contracts, procurement, or a combination of these areas. You will provide high-quality legal advice and practical solutions in a local government environment.

In addition to managing your own caseload, you will provide supervision, guidance and support to junior colleagues, including a Legal Assistant, helping to develop their skills and ensuring the efficient delivery of legal services across the Council.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage a varied and complex caseload, providing timely, practical and legally robust advice to Council services.
  • Advise elected Members, senior managers and officers on significant legal, governance and strategic matters.
  • Draft and negotiate a wide range of legal documentation, including contracts, land and property agreements, notices, policies and reports.
  • Supervise, mentor and support a Legal Assistant and other junior colleagues as required, contributing to their professional development and performance.
  • Support the Legal Services Manager in the delivery, development and continuous improvement of the Legal Service.
  • Build and maintain effective working relationships with internal clients, external organisations, partner authorities and other stakeholders.
  • Contribute to the promotion of best practice, knowledge sharing and resilience across the Legal Team.

We Are Looking For Someone Who:

  • Is a qualified Solicitor or Chartered Legal Executive with significant post-qualification experience in one or more relevant areas of law.
  • Has substantial experience of managing complex legal matters and providing high-quality legal advice to clients.
  • Demonstrates sound judgement, strong analytical skills and the ability to identify practical, solution-focused outcomes.
  • Has experience of supervising, mentoring or developing junior staff and supporting team performance.
  • Is highly organised, motivated and able to manage competing priorities while maintaining excellent standards of service delivery.
  • Possesses excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the confidence to advise and influence at all levels of the organisation, including elected Members, senior leadership and external stakeholders.
  • Is committed to delivering excellent customer service and contributing positively to a collaborative and supportive team culture.

The Council operates a flexible working policy with hybrid working arrangements. Attendance at Council offices, committee meetings, hearings and court proceedings will be required as necessary.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced legal professional seeking a rewarding senior role within local government, where you can make a tangible contribution to the delivery of public services while helping to develop the next generation of legal professionals.
