Help Keep Our Most Vulnerable Young People Safe on Their Journey to Education
At Derbyshire County Council, we are committed to ensuring that children and young people with special educational needs (SEN) travel to and from school or college safely and with dignity. We are currently seeking a Travel Assessor with a strong understanding of health and safety and experience in conducting risk assessments, to join our dedicated SEN Transport Team.
The Role
This is a vital role in which you will carry out assessments to determine the transport needs of children and young people with additional needs and evaluate any risks associated with their journey. Your findings will help shape safe and appropriate transport arrangements, ensuring each passenger’s specific needs are met.
Key responsibilities include:
- Visiting schools, homes, and transport pickup points to assess the suitability and safety of transport arrangements.
- Identifying risks to passengers with complex needs and creating comprehensive, tailored risk assessments.
- Advising on control measures to support safe, effective transport for individual passengers.
- Working closely with families, schools, transport providers, and internal teams to ensure safety and compliance.
- Supporting the implementation of Personal Travel Plans and passenger assistant requirements based on assessed risk.
What We’re Looking For
We’re looking for someone who:
- Has a good understanding of health & safety principles, ideally within a transport or care setting.
- Can produce clear, concise, and well-structured risk assessments.
- Has experience working with vulnerable groups, including those with special educational needs and/or disabilities.
- Is a confident communicator, able to explain findings and recommendations to families and colleagues.
- Can manage a caseload, work independently
- A working knowledge of SEN transport, safeguarding procedures, and relevant legislation is desirable. A full UK driving licence
What We Offer
- A chance to make a real difference to children and families across Derbyshire.
- A supportive and collaborative working environment.
- Flexible working hours and hybrid working options.
- Generous annual leave and access to the Local Government Pension Scheme.
- Training and development to support your professional growth.
This represents a great opportunity for someone looking to join the Council, for a change in job, or ambitious for a development opportunity to enhance skills.
