We are looking for a Solicitor/Barrister with rights of audience, to join our small and busy Legal Services Team to proactively contribute to the provision of a comprehensive legal service to Officers to meet the challenges ahead. You must be motivated, enthusiastic and be a proactive team player and preferably have experience in Local Government Law and Governance, but that is not an essential requirement.
We would welcome applications from Solicitors with experience in Litigation or Planning. When submitting your application please refer to the relevant job description and person specification.
By joining our team, you will help to build a prosperous future for our Borough, and you will play a key role to support the delivery of the Council’s priorities. The role does not have any time recording or billing targets instead it is the quality of work that is most important rather than profit. The Council can offer a variety of work where no two days are the same and you will be given training and development support as required.
Depending upon their area of expertise the successful candidate will:
- Advise and provide legal representation to Officers on all litigation matters including Anti-social Behaviour and Housing matters, Environmental Protection and Licensing and/or provide advice on Planning matters, including the drafting of S106 Agreements, leases, licenses and advising on all contract and procurement matters.
- Have the flexibility to be able to attend out of hours meeting as required, including evening meetings of the Council’s Licensing and/or Planning Committees.
- Attend criminal and civil courts, and/or planning tribunals as the Council’s representative.
- Advise members and provide general advice to Officers as required on a variety of areas of law.
Other information:
The Council has a generous annual leave scheme which varies according to local government service, if you have 5 years and above of local government continuous service, the annual leave entitlement is 31 days. If you have less than 5 years local government continuous service, the annual leave entitlement is 23 days.
In addition, you are also entitled to 8 bank holidays, 2 extra statutory days and 1 or 2 concessionary days per annum.
The Council provides automatic membership of the Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS) to new employees and operates a flexible working scheme for employees to maintain a suitable work life balance.
You will normally be based at the Central Headquarters at the Town Hall in Ripley or at such other places of employment in the service of the Council as required. The Council offers hybrid working arrangements, free car parking and will pay for your Practising Certificate.
