We have some exciting opportunities for experienced Trading Standards Officers to join our Trading Standards service.

 Our Trading Standards service supports local businesses and helps consumers by tackling unfair and unsafe trading practices through enforcement, advice, and education. Ensuring that businesses operating in Derbyshire comply with trading standards legislation.

We’re looking for people who are enthusiastic and highly motivated to join and help deliver this service.  We have positions available in our Fair Trading and Safety/Business Support Teams however, we will consider applications from Trading Standards Officers with experience across other areas of Trading Standards law.  We are also open to applications from part-qualified officers where we can support applicants to complete their qualification.  The grade of the post (Grade 9 or Grade 11) will depend on level of qualification and experience.

You will be joining a supportive and flexible team of professionals and have managers who are supportive to facilitate your development.

What will I be doing:

  • Plan and lead project work, surveys, and inspections designed to assess the level of business compliance with trading standards legislation and take action to improve compliance.
  • Give accurate advice to consumers and businesses on trading standards law distinguishing where appropriate between legal requirements and those of good practice.
  • Assess and investigate complaints which reveal breaches of trading standards legislation using the appropriate criminal or civil law options
  • Conduct duties in accordance with the statutory enforcement powers accorded to trading standards officers complying with relevant legal duties and regulatory codes of practice applicable to the service

What skills and experience do you need to have?:

 

  • A thorough understanding of Fair Trading and/or Product Safety legislation
  • A full DCATS qualification or its antecedents for appointment at Grade 11, or part DCATS qualification (or equivalents) for appointment at Grade 9
  • Weights and Measures qualification and/or Food/Feed Law competence would be desirable
  • Good working knowledge across a range of Trading Standards functions

A positive attitude with excellent organisational / communication / IT skills and the ability to work with minimal supervision as part of a team are essential.

The roles are full time, but we will also consider applications from those seeking to work on a part-time basis.  The Trading Standards Team are based at Matlock, but as part of our Modern Ways of Working programme, we are currently working on a hybrid basis.  There’ll be an opportunity to discuss future working arrangements at interview.
