Trading Standards Enforcement Officer

Matlock/Hybrid

We have an exciting opportunity for two enthusiastic and motivated individuals to start a career in our Trading Standards Service as Enforcement Officers.

 As an Enforcement Officer, you will work and train alongside Trading Standards professionals, supporting local businesses and helping consumers by tackling unfair and unsafe trading practices through enforcement, advice and education.

 Joining our team, will involve working with colleagues across the service to: 

  • Prevent rogue traders perpetrating crimes against consumers, preying on the public (including older people or the most vulnerable) with false claims and scams.
  • Stop the sale of counterfeit goods and dangerous toys and products.
  • Ensure that the food you eat contains what it says on the label.
  • Prevents outbreaks of animal diseases.
  • Stop young children buying cigarettes, alcohol and vapes.
  • Ensures property agents act fairly with consumers who are buying or renting their home.
  • Ensure that consumers get what they pay for, both online and in shops, and so much more

You will also be supported to progress your career with us to gain Trading Standards professional qualifications. 

 If you have experience of dealing with the public, have good communication skills, a basic understanding of Trading Standards legislation and are willing to undertake further study and training, then we would like to hear from you.

You will be joining a supportive and flexible team of professionals and have managers who are supportive to facilitate your development.

What will I be doing: 

  • Advising traders and consumers on consumer legislation
  • Assessing and investigating complaints which reveal breaches of trading standards legislation using the appropriate criminal or civil law options
  • Conducting duties in accordance with the statutory enforcement powers
  • Carrying out visits and inspections to consumers and businesses across the county.
  • Providing support across the Trading Standards service as appropriate
  • Conducting duties in accordance relevant legal duties and regulatory codes of practice applicable to the service

  • Ability to deal confidently with members of the public and business
  • Ability to gather and accurately record information
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Good literacy, numeracy and ICT skills
  • Ability to comprehend technical and legal information and communicate this to others
  • Ability to work to agreed deadlines
  • Willingness, commitment and motivation to undertake further qualifications and professional development to degree standard.

 The Trading Standards Team are based at Matlock, but as part of our Modern Ways of Working programme, we are currently working on a hybrid basis.  There’ll be an opportunity to discuss future working arrangements at interview.
