Chesterfield as a historic market town is a great place to live and work, with a proud heritage, significant ambitions for the future of its communities and the gateway town to the Peak District National Park. We are centrally located with excellent transport connectivity to nearby towns and cities.

Chesterfield has significant ambitions in line with the Governments growth agenda with an adopted Local Plan placing sustainable development and jobs at its heart and aims to deliver regeneration projects, new housing and vibrant centres whilst safeguarding the unique character of the historic urban and rural areas of the district.

An opportunity has arisen for a part time, permanent Conservation Officer in Development Management to contribute to this agenda by providing advice on conservation matters and dealing with listed building consent applications.

The ideal candidate should have a professional qualification in conservation, architecture, planning, or urban design and is a member of the IHBC or RTPI along with an established track record in heritage and building conservation, preferably with experience of working in or with a Local Authority.  Experience of interpreting technical drawings and producing reports is essential as well as confidence in your knowledge, excellent communication and strong negotiation skills.

Candidates will need to have a clear understanding of what constitutes the historic environment and an ability to assess the relevant significance of its constituent parts; a good knowledge of historic building construction, materials, common defects and how to address them.

The Council is an excellent employer with rewarding conditions of service which include generous leave entitlement, flexible and agile working, progressive HR policies, access to the local government pension scheme and discounted leisure membership.
