New Mills School is a small, friendly 11–16 secondary school in the High Peak, close to the stunning Peak District National Park, yet within easy reach of Stockport and Manchester.

Following a very positive Ofsted report rating us ‘Good’ in all areas, we are looking for an exceptional leader to take on this exciting new role. This is an outstanding opportunity for an experienced Head of Department or an ambitious teacher ready for their first step into leadership.

The role combines leading PE and Sport Science with developing a whole-school approach to health, fitness, and wellbeing – making a real difference to the lives of our students and our community.

You will find New Mills School a warm, welcoming place, where we are proud of our inclusive ethos, high expectations, and strong sense of community. Our values—Think Big, Do the Right Thing, and Team Spirit—underpin everything we do.

The Role

  • This is a unique and developing leadership position. As Head of Physical Education, Health and Fitness, you will:
  • Lead and inspire the PE team to deliver an ambitious, inclusive and knowledge-rich curriculum for KS3 and KS4.
  • Oversee KS4 Sport Science and Health & Social Care courses, ensuring excellent teaching, learning and outcomes.
  • Develop a vibrant programme of extra-curricular sport, inter-school fixtures, and enrichment opportunities.
  • Coordinate the use of the school fitness suite for lessons, after-school activities and staff wellbeing.
  • Lead the school’s Healthy Schools initiative, embedding health and wellbeing across PSHE, student council, and whole-school campaigns.
  • Build strong partnerships with the local leisure centre and feeder primary schools to enhance PE and sports provision.

Our Ideal Candidate Will Be:

  • A passionate advocate for PE, health, and fitness with a track record of excellent teaching.
  • An inspiring leader who can motivate students and staff, with the drive to shape and grow this new role.
  • Skilled at designing curriculum and using data to secure strong progress for all students.
  • Committed to equality, inclusion, and encouraging participation from every student.
  • A team player who shares our values and works collaboratively to achieve the best outcomes for our school community.

We Will Guarantee:

  • A stimulating, supportive and friendly working environment, where every staff member is valued.
  • High-quality CPD and leadership development opportunities.
  • The chance to shape a new and exciting leadership role with whole-school impact.
  • Engaged, ambitious students who are keen to participate and succeed.
  • The satisfaction of leading a department and whole school initiative that improves the health and wellbeing of all.

If you share our values, have the expertise and vision to drive excellence in PE, Health and Fitness, and want to be part of an enthusiastic and dedicated team, we would love to hear from you.
