As we continue to expand our digital capabilities, we are seeking a motivated and enthusiastic Digital Developer with experience in web development to join our Digital Development team. This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in delivering accessible, responsive, and user-centred websites and applications for the council.
Reporting to our Senior Digital Developers, you will work closely with external designers, backend developers, and project managers to build and maintain digital platforms that meet the needs of our diverse users and support our commitment to delivering excellent public services online.
Key responsibilities:
- Develop and maintain high-quality, standards-compliant websites and web applications.
- Translate design prototypes into responsive, accessible, and functional front-end code.
- Collaborate with technical and non-technical colleagues, including third-party design teams and project stakeholders.
- Maintain and improve existing codebases and contribute to new projects.
- Debug and resolve frontend issues across browsers and devices.
- Contribute to a large-scale programme of work to bring externally hosted Council websites back in-house and migrate a portfolio of council websites to a new open-source content management system (CMS).
About you:
We are looking for someone with a strong interest in public sector digital services and the following skills and experience:
Essential:
- Proficiency in HTML and CSS, with an understanding of responsive design principles.
- Awareness of web accessibility standards and commitment to inclusive design.
- Ability to work from design specifications to develop functional web interfaces.
- Familiarity with modern JavaScript frameworks (e.g. React, Vue.js).
- Familiarity with modern server-side scripting languages such as .Net, PHP
- Experience of using API’s
- Understanding of version control systems, particularly Git.
Desirable:
- Knowledge of cloud hosting environments, such as AWS or Microsoft Azure.
- Experience working with open-source CMS platforms (e.g. WordPress, Drupal).
- Understanding of web design, responsive design.
- Experience of using AI to assist in web development.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Power Platform and exposure to open-source technologies would be an advantage.
- Understanding of Agile delivery practices and collaborative development environments.
