Purpose of the Post

To supervise Regular, Deputy and Mobile School Crossing Patrols in part of the county to provide a safe, effective and efficient service at all times. Duties will be carried out at appropriate times of the day.

Duties and Responsibilities - Specific

To supervise Regular, Deputy and Mobile School Crossing Patrols in a defined area of the county to ensure a safe, effective and efficient service.
To manage and prioritise the duties of Mobile and Deputy School Crossing Patrols including arranging appropriate standby cover for absent Patrols as required by the service.
To be responsible for maintaining accurate and up to date records and to ensure effective communication and co-ordination of information with the School Crossing Patrol Co-ordinator, centralised support staff and School Crossing Patrols.
To be the first point of contact for School Crossing Patrols and deal with associated issues such as operational/traffic incidents, welfare/personal, absence and site issues.
To assess existing and proposed School Crossing Patrol sites in accordance with County Council Policies, including Health and Safety, and prescribed standards and to make recommendations to the School Crossing Patrol Co-ordinator.
To be responsible for on site liaison, especially in dealing with location difficulties, with outside bodies including utilities, bus/taxi operators and members of the public.
To supervise operational patrols on a regular basis as prescribed in national and departmental guidelines and completing records and recording information accurately as required.
To publicise vacancies for School Crossing Patrols on a local basis and to assist in the recruitment and selection processes as required by the School Crossing Patrol Co-ordinator.
To conduct recruitment interviews for School Crossing Patrols and Deputies and to provide assistance and support as appropriate and in accordance with the authority’s Recruitment and Selection procedures.
To be responsible for the training of School Crossing Patrols and new Area Supervisors, and to deputise for other Area Supervisors as required.
To be responsible for the management of uniform and equipment including the assessment, allocation, recording and storage of stock.
To attend meetings as appropriate including Supervisors Meetings and site meetings.
In exceptional circumstances and in the absence of any other cover, to carry out the duties of a School Crossing Patrol until other arrangements can be made or until the appropriate schools and parents have been informed.
To liaise with schools, parents, police and other interested parties to ensure good working relationships and to facilitate the distribution of information to parents and within the community.
To respond to queries from members of the public, schools, elected Members in a helpful and constructive manner and to attend meetings as required by the School Crossing Patrol Co-ordinator and service.
To be mindful of the needs of and safety of vulnerable road users and disabled people.
Area Supervisors are required to work unsociable hours, including weekends, in order to ensure the effective and efficient delivery of the service within the community. Such work duties will include dealing with telephone queries, arranging emergency standby cover and dealing with urgent personnel and welfare issues.
They will need to be flexible in their approach to the working week. Some duties will have to be undertaken at short notice. The actual working period may vary from day to day to match service needs. The role of this post will also have some impact on the postholders home situation. The above to be regarded as the normal pattern of duties.
Postholders will be required to provide home office facilities and a home telephone, to undertake work duties, for which an allowance and reimbursement for call charges will be made.
An unsociable hours payment is being recommended in recognition of the above requirements.
Area Supervisors will also be required to hold a full driving licence and make available a suitable vehicle for which a casual car user allowance will be paid, or to have other personal transport readily available.
Applicants will be required to undertake a medical examination and a police criminal records check.

Duties and Responsibilities - General

To adhere to existing working practices, methods, procedures, undertake relevant training and development activities and to respond positively to new and alternative systems.
It will be necessary to work with information technology and associated systems in accordance with County Council policies.
To co-operate with the council in complying with relevant health and safety legislation, policies and procedures in the performance of the duties of the post.
To carry out the duties and responsibilities of the post in compliance with the County Council's equal opportunities policies.
To maintain confidentiality and observe data protection and associated guidelines where appropriate.
To understand and comply with the County Council's environmental policies.
To carry out any other reasonable duties and responsibilities within the overall function, commensurate with the grading and level of responsibilities of the post.
