Job Title:

Apprentice Mechanics

Purpose of the Post

To assist in carrying out routine maintenance and repair of vehicles/plant, including motorcycles, as defined by the Motor Vehicle Retail and Repair Industry and vehicle manufacturers specification in accordance with the Environmental Services Department’s Apprenticeship scheme.

Duties and Responsibilities - Specific

To assist in the maintenance and repair of all types of petrol and diesel engined vehicles, plant and motorcycles operated by the County, or other customers on maintenance contracts.
To assist in the maintenance and repair plant and equipment of a type that by its nature and design falls in the capabilities of a vehicle mechanic.
To assist in conducting routine inspections, condition reports indicating if uneconomic to repair, and pre-MOT/DOT inspections as necessary.
To assist in carrying out MOT tests.
To assist in undertaking roadworthiness inspections of vehicles in operational use.
To assist in diagnosing vehicle defects and inform the Service Manager/Foreman Mechanic of work content.
To assist in identifying repairs required through unfair wear and tear and advise the Service Manager/Foreman Mechanic.
To assist in carrying out general repairs and major overhauls or replacement of engines and gearboxes as required.
To attend vehicle breakdowns and conduct roadside repairs as necessary (within normal working hours).
To assist in carrying out automotive electrical work.
To assist in carrying out gas and electrical welding as necessary.
To liase with site manager / contact and determine specification of work to be undertaken and in consultation with Service Manager agree method of work and price, communicating same to site manager / contact.
To liase with Transport personnel in relation to supply of parts, equipment etc as required with suppliers.
To co-ordinate the scheduling of repairs and ordering / receiving of parts etc.
To attend major incidents in support of operational personnel.
To ensure the security of vehicles/sites as appropriate, maintaining site in a safe place.
To complete all documentation including worksheets, certificates, receipts applying signatures as appropriate
To complete motor insurance accident claim forms in the event of accidents incurred whilst driving any vehicle owned, operated by or in the custody of County Transport and submit them to the Foreman Mechanic or Service Manager.
To record all times and attendance hours to facilitate payment.
To undertake statutory training as may be required and product training by consultation.

Duties and Responsibilities - General

To adhere to existing working practices, methods, procedures, undertake relevant training and development activities and to respond positively to new and alternative systems.
It will be necessary to work with information technology and associated systems in accordance with County Council policies.
To co-operate with the council in complying with relevant health and safety legislation, policies and procedures in the performance of the duties of the post.
To carry out the duties and responsibilities of the post in compliance with the County Council's equal opportunities policies.
To maintain confidentiality and observe data protection and associated guidelines where appropriate.
To understand and comply with the County Council's environmental policies.
To carry out any other reasonable duties and responsibilities within the overall function, commensurate with the grading and level of responsibilities of the post.
